Some
of the main activities that PELUM is involved in are:
- Learning
and Networking
PELUM Association enhances the culture and promote exchange
of experiences among its members by increasing access
to different knowledge and technologies. It does this
by organizing and facilitating capacity building workshops
in the region. Key activities in this thematic area include:-
1. Identifying learning needs
2. Course design and implementation
3. Course organization and coordination
4. Crystallizing learning experience about PELUM
5. Building capacities of CWGs to carry out effective
training
6. Developing ways of measuring development
7. Documenting success stories
8. Assisting members to gain access to good science in
research institutes.
9. Facilitating exchange visits between countries
10. Creating partnerships between farmers, scientists
and development workers to address farmers’ priority
in research and establish linkages between IKS and conventional
science.
11. Building member capacity in participatory research
and technology development
12. Improving ways of scaling up best practices
13. Building a case for sustainable development
14. Carrying out relevant research on developmental practices.
- Information
and Communication
PELUM promotes the culture of communication, information
sifting and purposeful use of the acquired knowledge within
the members and partners. Key activities in thematic areas
include:-
1. Media relations and public relations
2. Publications and publicity materials especially contributions
solicited from the members
3. Keeping a database of PELUM members
4. Information sifting for members
5. Facilitating networking and information sharing among
members
6. Website maintenance
7. Be a focal point for receiving and disseminating information.
- Advocacy
PELUM Association helps build the capacity of members,
communities and small scale farmers to campaign, advocate,
lobby and fight against oppressive and exploitative policies.
Key activities in this thematic area include:-
1. Policy analysis
2. Capacity building of members, communities and small
scale farmers
3. Supporting the small scale farmer forums and groups
4. Actual involvement in the CAL activities
5. Participating in relevant local, national, regional
and international forums
- HIV/AIDS
PELUM works with members to mitigate on the negative impact
created by HIV/AIDS. Key activities include developing
and implementing a policy on HIV/AIDS.
- Gender
PELUM promotes development that ensures that both mean
and women benefit from development and economic initiatives.
The main activities include mainstreaming of gender and
development policy.
- Organizational
Development
PELUM promotes the organization development for members
and strategic partners. As a member-driven network, PELUM
undertakes activities that address the identified needs
of members. The key activities in this include.
1. Capacity building in appropriate leadership governance
and management skills
2. Facilitate the growth of members and of the small scale
farmers forum
3. Increase member participation at local, national and
regional level.
4. Facilitate internal networking within the associates
so as to increase the benefits of networking
