What does PELUM mean?
Participatory Ecological Land Use Management

What then is the PELUM association?
A network of civil society organizations working with grass-root communities in East and Southern Africa. All PELUM members work with grass-root farmers.

When was PELUM started?
In 1995

Where does PELUM operate?
Operates in nine countries of East and Southern Africa: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, Lesotho and Botswana.

How many members does PELUM have?
The association has grown from the 25 pioneer members to 170 members in the ESA region. PELUM Kenya has 19 members.

Why was PELUM started?

  1. To promote participatory ecological land use management in East and Southern Africa
  2. Build the capacity of members and partner to respond appropriately towards the empowerment of communities.
  3. Promote the use of indigenous knowledge and local innovations.
  4. To strengthen linkages and collaboration through action learning among partners and members
  5. To campaign, advocate and lobby for change of policies in favour of small scale farmers.
  6. To increase the visibility of small scale farmers.
